So for those who don't know, a YouTube channel called BlueCorpStudios had been working on a Sonic fan film for about two years. It just came out a few days ago and I thought I'd share my thoughts on it.
In short? I didn't like it.
I think it's supposed to be a prequel to Sonic 1. The basic plot is that Robotnik is trying to take over the world (Of course!) and he's "taken care of" all the anthropomorphic creatures on South Island...except the "Blue Blur," who is destroying all of Eggy's robots. Robotnik is trying to take over Station Square and GUN is trying to stop him but they keep failing. Sonic has to bail them out but nobody ever sees him, only a "blue blur," hence his super hero title. Eventually a small GUN squad gets saved by Sonic again and they see him. Now Eggman knows who Sonic is and is after him. The film ends with Sonic running around Green Hill Zone and then we get a small shot of Knuckles. It was very basic, predictable, and overall very lazy. It took itself way too damn seriously and ended up sounding extremely forced and lame. Sonic isn't supposed to be taken so seriously. That's one reason why people hated Sonic 06.
I'll talk about the things I did like about it first. The fact that they managed to cast Jaleel White as the voice for Sonic, BrentalFloss, James Rofle (The Angry Video Game Nerd), AND Doug Walker (The Nostalgia Critic) is pretty damn impressive. Three internet celebrities, and I'm sure there's more that I don't know who got cameos too. Kind of sad that the AVGN is the only one who got a line but Doug's performance as a GUN soldier was pretty cool. Floss was only there for background, unfortunately.
And...that's basically all I can say that I liked about the video. I know, the cameos are the only thing I liked. That doesn't bode well.
All and all, the entire film is a little under twenty minutes. And there is my first problem. I know they had limited resources and were running solely on donations, but seriously? You work two years on this thing, cast awesome people like Doug Walker and James Rofle, and it's not even twenty minutes? Five of that is spent on opening and ending credits? I'm sorry but that's just not worth it. We waited for two years and THIS is all we got? It's like waiting for an SMBZ episode, except not nearly as good of an ending product. (And yes, I do know that SMBZ is officially dead.)
My second problem is with Sonic himself. He looks TERRIBLE. I don't know who did the CGI rendering of Sonic but he needs to be shot. Multiple times. His quills are so frayed that for a second I thought he was in his werehog form. I think they were trying to made him look a little more realistic, and I know real hedgehogs don't have sleek quills like Sonic usually does, but that's where I have an issue. Sonic ISN'T SUPPOSED TO LOOK REALISTIC. I had that problem with Sonic 06's style, but at least Sonic 06 looked A LOT better than this. And what the hell was with Sonic's mouth?! It just freaked me out! Why was it so freaking huge?!
As for Jaleel White's performance, let me just say that I love Jaleel White's Sonic voice...when he was still doing Sonic cartoons. In this fan film, it sounded like he was trying too hard to recreate his voice for Sonic and ended up making him sound like a black kid that hadn't reached puberty yet, if you'll pardon the very racist statement. It was horrendous. I wish they'd gotten Kovabomb or BeeleenaProductions to voice Sonic.
Eggman himself was kinda cool, I guess. His voice was too deep and, again, they made him too serious. He's supposed to be the mad genius type, with a high pitched laughter that just sounds evil. He wasn't this at all. Not to mention, they talk about the Robotization process but they never actually show it. Why? The robots were all E-102 Gamma lookalikes besides the occasional Buzz Bomber and ladybug looking robot that I forget the name of.
Now for Knuckles... Oh man. You only see him for a few seconds at the very end but I already have a problem with him. This is complete nitpicking, I admit that, but WHY THE HELL DOES KNUCKLES HAVE FINGERS?! Seriously, aren't his boxing glove things easier to animate? Why give him fingers? JUST WHY?! He looks awful!
Actually, this entire movie looked awful, not just the characters. The CGI rendering with real life was very poorly done, ESPECIALLY with Sonic. His movements weren't fast in the slightest. He jumped and moved like he was on the moon. It was really annoying and distracting. The overall acting was pretty bad too. I don't know who those other actors were but it was just bad. Really, really, bad.
If you're a Sonic fan, at least check it out. But trust me, it's nothing special.
